Jegog is a form of gamelan music indigenous to Bali, Indonesia played on instruments made of bamboo. The tradition of jegog is centered in Jembrana, a region in Western Bali. In recent years jegog has started to become popular in other regions of Bali with a few groups being established in central Bali to entertain tourists. International interest has been spread by tourists visiting Bali and by recordings. There are virtually no ensembles outside of Bali with the exception of at least one group in Japan and one in the United States. Jegog music is very fast, loud, rhythmic and precise. Pieces last from a few minutes to as long as thirty minutes. |

Kecak (pronounced: "KEH-chahk", alternate spellings: Ketjak, Ketjack, and Ketiak), a form of Balinese music drama, originated in the 1930s and is performed primarily by men. Also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, the piece, performed by a circle of 100 or more performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting "cak", and throwing up their arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana where monkeys help Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. However, Kecak has roots in sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.
In the 1930's Wayan Limbak worked with German painter Walter Spies to create the Kecak from movements and themes in the traditional sanghyang exorcism ritual and the portions of the Ramayana. This collaboration between artists worked to create a dance that was both authentic to Balinese traditions but also palatable to Western tourist's narrow tastes at the time. Wayan Limbak popularized the dance by traveling throughout the world with Balinese performance groups. These travels have helped to make the Kecak famous throughout the world.

Ramayana Dance has the exact story line as the Kecak except that they are accompanied by the gamelan. Animals in Balinese plays are allowed more freedoms than human characters. This is true in both the dance and the performance as seen in the monkey and daemon characters. Because Rama and Laksmana are seen as idealized personifications of beauty, they are played by women.

KODOK is a traditional frog dance. It tells a story of a prince of Jenggala who was fond of catching dragonflies and disappeared in a dense forest near an erupting volcano. A few years later a frog emerged which was believed to be the reincarnation of the lost prince. One day the prince-frog encountered a beautiful princess of Daha, fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. Unable to fulfill this dream the frog committed itself to ascetic life, but by the great God Wisnu was turned into a handsome young man, resembling the lost prince of Jenggala. |
